Answer the following questions in no less than 300 words but no greater than 1000 words put together...
Character's background (their past and present): Right here
Character's personality: A military man, Keyes takes what that means seriously. He knows what his rank is and where he stands on his ship and demands the respect owed to him. Which makes him rather touchy about nicknames like Professor or Schoolmaster, he's Instructor Keyes when in the classroom and his appropriate rank on his ship. Not to say that he holds this over everyone, in fact he doesn't unless a situation demands he uses his rank or he's making a point, like reminding an pilot how to do his job because he was getting cocky. He has a healthy respect for the chain of command as well, listening to his commander whom everyone else had misgivings about his reputation. That was his CO and he would listen to him no matter what. He's intensely loyal in that regard as well as loyal to the service.

Because he takes his position seriously he also does all he can to protect people. This tends to be the reason behind his plans that have given him a reputation and would in the future. These plans range from being brave and smart to just foolhardy, but they tend to usually work and save as many as he can. In this regard he's also not afraid to throw his own life in the line of things to get things done, being the first out of a hole in a ship to try and get word out to his ship that the ship they were investigating was a trap for example. This ties into the fact that he's perceptive, he tends to make connections that people don't and people tend to stare at him long and hard for what he does because of what he sees. But because he is perceptive he stands by what he concludes and tries to do what he can from it, from his plans to keeping his mouth shut about things that don't concern him.

It's that latter part that has brought him to the attention of others, namely admirals and Dr. Halsey. Keeping a secret is something that not many do, and even though it made his early career difficult it's one thing he's never changed. Some things are better left not shared after all, and some things he won't allow to be shared. He sticks to the Cole Protocol because of what it means to save more lives, and he keeps his mouth shut about things because such things will cause more grief for others, in the case that originally caught Halsey's eye it would be the career of the instructor in charge of the exercise that went wrong. By that extension he also knows when to not ask questions, some things he just doesn't need to know about.

He's also described as a good man by people and that mostly comes from the fact that he treats everyone with respect. He may be not appreciate the situation he meets people in, but he tries to treat everyone fairly and that includes not listening to rumors about them. He prefers building his own opinions on people and so far that hasn't lead him wrong yet.

He cares a great deal for not only friends but his family and even children that he meets. He's kept the names of all the children he met while looking into them for Halsey in his head, and he constantly thinks about his daughter, Miranda, and how she is. He treats even Miranda's mother, Catherine Halsey, with respect and as a gentleman even though they are no longer together and Miranda changed her name to Keyes. He treats her well and is capable of even long talks about things with her without anything too awkward and at one point has even kissed her cheek goodbye when she was looking for a handshake. He's also aware of what he does to them and tries to change it, he notices it especially with how he treats Miranda and makes a note to change how he acts around her.

He prefers to handle problems head on if at all possible, using his out of the box tactical thinking to work around problems as best as he can, which at times can also be reckless. At times that's all he can do however, and if it means saving the lives of thousands of people then he'll do all he can. It's out of that sort of thinking that the Keyes Loop was born.

Character's skills/abilities/powers: A stupidly out of the box tactician, Jacob is rather famous for his Keyes Loop but also the Air Brake Drop done in his youth, both dangerous but highly effective tactics. He's a ship's officer in an active military, so his skills are focused on combat primarily, how to shoot a weapon, board an enemy vessel and such. But his true claim to fame is his talent as an astrogator, as he's got a particular knack for getting his ship in just the right spot at the right time and in one piece (mostly). This extends to the capital ships he ends up on as well as down to the smallest shuttle, all of which he's able to pilot without problem once he's figured out the controls (including enemy craft).
Any special equipment your character is bringing along? This includes weaponry, magic items, etc.: None, except for his Command Neural Implant, a device stuck in his skull that every UNSC captain has. It can't be removed without surgery or death, and it links him up to his ship, ship's AI, lets him see it's status and such. It also acts as a handy dandy IF tag and location tracker.

Also his grandfather's pipe, which isn't super special at all except for sentimental reasons.
Are you bringing your character to [community profile] ten_fwd from another game? If you are, which game?: Nope!
If you answered yes above, briefly summarize how they were changed by and what challenges they faced in the climate of their previous game(s): N/A
Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? Jacob is a character I've played on and off for a few years, and is another I miss having in a game! Unlike Reg, who I also apped this round, I'd like to see Jacob settle in an universe without war and be focused on bringing peace without blowing something up. Also, the idea of him getting over the urge to shoot an alien on sight is also fun to play with!

Why I want to bring him back: Last time I was in game I didn't even get a chance to intro him ICly. Work was kicking my butt and I wasn't up to introing him after I'd dropped the ball so bad. Now that it's slowed down, I can focus on a game and him better.

Writing Sample #1: The ship was too big. Not just in comparison to the Autumn or the Iroquois, but in general, it was too big and full of just too much stuff. He hadn't seen anything that could compare to it in space since well, The Rubble and that had been an asteroid colony essentially. This was civilian shops mixed with science labs and technology he hadn't really used or heard of before all contained on a ship.

Hence it was just too big, there was just too much to it.

Not that he was complaining too loudly, it was nice to be on a ship not meant for war. A little different from what he was used too sure, in the size and everything and he felt a little disoriented (or maybe that was just the shock of it all, he wasn't sure yet) but nothing he couldn't handle. Except really, in the diversity of the crew. Humans mixed with non-humans, not that every non-human was a Covenant race of course, but years of war against such foes had pretty much soured him in regards to them in general (but one only had to look at all the worlds glassed by the Covenant, the people killed, his own list of injuries to see why really). So the idea that an entire branch of a government was set to explore new space and make contact and peace with them was, well he wasn't sure what really.

Which is really why (and not the worry over what was happening with RED FLAG with him gone, not worrying over Catherine and Miranda and the Autumn and his crew that he barely knew except for the Iroquois transfers) he had decided to take a jog through the ship. Yes, he could have probably found a way to make the holodeck let him do it in a confined area but he wasn't quite comfortable messing with that yet, and running was supposed to be fun for him. Almost like therapy, almost, without the nagging presence of someone trying to get his feelings out of him (and without his mother's bribe of food after). He could have brooded in his room with his pipe, but the run also gave him a chance to figure out the ship and he really didn't have too much of a reputation at stake here that he couldn't do this.

Hence why the ship was just too big, even as he turned the corner and found himself somewhere he wasn't sure where but it certainly didn't look like a place he'd been too before. "What I wouldn't do for an AI right now, or at least a familiar ship. Or a map."
Writing Sample #2 (optional): It's a little long and a little old but it's something
